March 6 is a date every Texas school child learns to remember. On that day in 1836 (remember that year also!) the Alamo fort in San Antonio fell to Santa Anna’s Mexican army. The defenders fought to the last man. There were no survivors.
Well, that’s not quite true. Women and children survived the battle, as did Travis’s slave Joe, and one man who convinced the Mexican soldiers that he was a captive.
They did fight to the last man. Santa Anna had decreed “no quarter.” The defenders had no choice.
Copies of a diary attributed to one of the Mexican officers surfaced in the 1950’s. It related that several of the defenders, including Davy Crockett, were captured alive and then executed. Texan historians immediately pronounced it “fraud!”
Who was the editor who said, “When confronted with the truth and the legend, print the legend?”
Rosie Castro, prominent San Antonio politician, said “I hate that place! Tear it down!” Her son Julian, candidate for US President, said it’s a valuable tourist attraction.
”Remember the Alamo!”
