The Persistent, Insistent Horse

Once upon a time, my grandchildren, we rode horses to work – to school – wherever we needed to go. Horses still walk among us, tokens of another time before Henry Ford and his competitors gave us gasoline power. We don’t horses any more. Or do we?

Whoa, there, Pardner! I know, I know, horses still work on the ranch, in places you can’t use a pickup truck or a four-wheeler or a golf cart. We still run the Derby. We teach our children to ride – for pleasure. They're just no longer essential parts of our civilization, as they were for thousands of years. Is there anyone alive today, who can claim a horse saved his life?

Horses and humans have come along way together, haven’t we? Sure, we’ve bred horses for those characteristics we want. Speed, or strength, or gentleness, or just plain beauty. We’ve raised the colts and trained them, teaching them to accept us, to do our bidding.

 And I wonder – have horses changed us as well? Is there some place in my DNA, a little twist or trait that allows me to understand the needs of the horse kingdom? Have we co-evolved; grown old together, so to speak? Maybe horses do more than reinforce our humanity. Maybe they are a big part of it.

 Perhaps horses now share that certain space with dogs and cats, more than pets but not quite a separate culture. (Well, cats may actually be aliens, watching us.)

 So. What can we learn from horses?

For me horses are more than just a passtime. I have loved horses for as long as I can remember. My earliest memory is of a horse. I was two years old so I am told when an ucle put a belt around the neck of an old farm horse and gave me my first ride. It has been about that long that I have been an incurable animal person. Scaring my poor mother senseless by petting strange dogsthat by her discription might bite me. The same was true of my love of horses. All I ever wanted in life was a horse. I made do with the occasional trail ride, a week of riding lessons one summer and a good friend's horse. There were farm ponies as wild as they were wooly and the forgotten curcus mare whom I could only curry and dream of riding because she was pregnant and lame. There was also a Coggins positive gelding that lived at my grandfather's orange grove. As I write this I am nostalgic for every moment I shared with a horse. Friends come and go but every horse I have known holds a special place in my heart. The love of horses has been my compass my memories triggered by warm leather hay and horse sweat. I concider myself the lucky one to have known them and a better person for the adventures. Thanks Dac for a chance to gush about my favorite subject hope to run into you at the Ga. center sometime

When I was little 6 0r so , we had a horse named red . He was a big roan. We were constantly warned to stay away from Red, but our favorite game was running under his belly. He would stand so still and never kicked any of us. Later on we moved to a place where he had to be tied on a rope and moved daily. He hated it, and when I would go to ride him he would stand so still as I struggled to lift the saddle up and get his bridle on. Then he would fly. One day he flew over a large fat mesquite bush, I thought I was a goner but big red didn't let me down, I was 12 then When we left El Indio, he was sold to a border patrolman , I know he had lots of fun and work that he liked so much. If you are ever in Kentucky, a visit to the Kentucky Horse Park is a must. The parade of horses (breeds from all over the world in their full rig-outs) is a fantastic experience even for a non horse person like me who's best achievement is to
recognize one in a field.

When I was a teen I had a wonderful horse for a best friend. I knew she loved me as I loved her. In my mind I still hear her dear,soft nicker of recognition. I can see her ears come to attention. We loved riding thru the bluebonnets. She would follow me like a puppy. Of course I was changed for the better for having known her!
